Predictions I've Made & Rankings of Some Software

Predictions

This post is just a rambling of tech predictions that I have made in the past. Sure some others made these predictions, but I came up with my own conclusions after using the products and such.

First is Google .....

Way back when I first started using Google I said that they were going to become a big company based on their "ideals". Some now would argue that they no longer follow those "ideals" but I will get to that in a little bit.

I liked Google for its simplicity, and it brings up always brought up good results. After Google became popular some argued about how pages got their page rankings and such, but whatever they complained about it made search engines work harder on giving better results. Google pushed others to come up with better results. The other thing it did is show how a company could make money on ads linked with search.

Of course we all know that Google ventured off into other areas which I also predicted. Gmail is a great system in my opinion.

Now for what I think is going to happen. Google has pushed itself into a change. Whereas it is still more simplified than other sites. They are starting to show signs of going into a more complicated phase. If they push it to far they might lose some of the market share although it won't be a significant drop.

I like Google + but there are not many people jumping over from Facebook. It is a well thought out simple site, but it also lacks something that I just can't put my finger on... oh yes I can users of the non tech populace. I think it will survive longer than Wave and Buzz .... but they need to find a way to get out to more people. It also could be that people have facebook already and simply just don't want to add another thing into their lives. (I believe that is what happened in part to myspace... they went to facebook and just didn't want to maintain two social areas)

They have had project that have failed but they continue to be innovative and who doesn't want to work for Google. Many even those not in the tech world have heard about the perks of the Googleplex.

Second up is Myspace ....

Myspace was of course the first big social media site. We all know what happened to it. Once it was bought out by the big company it was pretty much over. I predicted that, when I heard of the sale I said this could be very bad for myspace. The thing myspace had that was appealing wasn't appealing to all. You could change around your layout and change up the styling of your page. That was a double edged sword, some liked it others hated it and other over did it. All those glittery banners and such were annoying. Many people had no idea on what colors not to put on what backgrounds, etc. That wasn't its downfall though. Eventually people went for the fresh no clutter site and it just lost its footing. Something I predicted.

Third is Facebook ....

Back before it was cool I said facebook is going to overcome myspace for the simple fact that if it gets away from its "regions" and "college" only networks people will jump to it because it has a simplistic feel and many of the annoyances of facebook are not there. I guess I was right on that one.

However facebook although it does not have the customization options that myspace had/has the new timeline layout reminds me a lot of facebook. I myself hate the timeline. We will see how it plays out. They also have a lot of issues with privacy (however that is a separate issue.... if you don't want it seen don't flipping post it on the internet, people are so stupid sometimes). The other annoying thing about facebook is the games and game invites... damn it facebook create a separate channel or something for those.

Last is the Firefox Browser....

When i first started using it I said this is going to take some of IE's market share and eventually force IE to make innovations. I was correct once again. IE had no plans to move past IE 6 until they got slapped in the face and kicked in the shins by Firefox. At first I believe Firefox was used primarily by tech people but they started passing it onto their friends and such. A lot of people believe Firefox came up with multi-tab browsing. They did not, they just made it popular. (Opera if I'm not mistaken had it first, which is another subject, Opera is a great browser also, many innovations in browser world comes from the fine group that makes Opera)

A lot is owed to Firefox for actually cracking into the market share of IE or else we wouldn't have had so many innovations in the browser arena.

Rankings

Internet Browsers

1. Firefox
2. Opera
3. Chrome
4. Safari
5. IE (as long as it is 7 or 8, IE 6 is a security nightmare)

Free AntiVirus

1. Avast
2. AVG

(Note: I hate MacAfee Antivirus.... never use it. If you have to buy something  make it G Data Internet Security 2012 or Bitdefender Internet Security 2012, or Kaspersky Internet Security 2012. The two free ones above should work for the people who use their computer only for browsing and email.)

Purchasing Computers or Computer Parts

1. iBuyPower.com (Semi Custom Computers)
2. CyberPower.com
3. Newegg.com
4. Tigerdirect.com

And that is the end of my rant for today.....well for this rant anyway
